ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry (ABCCM) is seeking the community’s support over the next several days to meet the needs of the unhoused population as there are five Code Purple nights forecasted between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Code Purple is a coordinated effort among Asheville and Buncombe County shelters and other organizations that saves lives, as the effort provides emergency overflow shelter to people experiencing homelessness during extremely cold weather (at or below 32 degrees, including wind chill, or 33-40 degrees with precipitation).
According to a recent count, there were about 120 unsheltered persons — men, women and children, including veterans and intact families.
“The volunteers and 300+ congregations help reunite families, expand capacity to meet the changing needs and the changing weather,” said Rogers, executive director of ABCCM. “Anyone who would like to be part of the solution to homelessness can join our teams of volunteers, receive training in best practices, and be part of offering people a pathway into safe and healthy community.”
